Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
Has someone suggested that your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADD, or ADHD? These terms have become such household words that professionals and non-professionals alike are quick to attach the ADHD label to students who exhibit behaviors associated with this disorder. In 2006, 4.5 million children 5-17 years of age had been diagnosed with ADHD, with over 50% being treated with medications. (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention)
If you think that your child may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, consider the following points:
- The ADHD diagnosis is typically based on behaviors alone, not on brain scans or other medical procedures.
- ADHD-like behaviors may result from a variety of causes. (See the Symptoms Comparison Chart for examples.)
- Medications do not address the causes, only the symptoms of the problem.
- Educators, therapists, doctors, nutritionists, and parents have found ways to reduce or eliminate ADHD symptoms for many children without medication, by addressing the causes of the symptoms
- Medications work sometimes. Medications expose your child to possible side-effects every time.
At Abba's Child Learning Center, we recognize that a child with learning problems is likely to exhibit restlessness, inattentiveness, disruptive behaviors, and other ADHD symptoms. (See the Symptoms Comparison Chart for some common examples.) Once a child's underlying learning problems are resolved and he or she is able to be successful in school, many ADHD symptoms are eliminated.
For children who actually do have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, we recommend working with a doctor or other health practitioner who has specific training and experience in resolving symptoms caused by nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, and other physiological problems.
Our goal is to see children freed from the limiting effects of ADHD symptoms so that they can be successful without the need for medications, special services, or accommodations.
